clusters, which have been characterized with respect to their chemical structure and composition before being applied as molecular sources to nanostructured materials.

In the past few years, the use of molecular compounds as precursors to thin films and powders has been extensively explored. There are many excellent examples of the use of SSPs for one-, two-, three-, and four-component systems and even biphasic composites [16, 19, 20, 29, 43, 44, 47, 52-315].

The salient examples of compounds used as a single source to solid-state phases are assembled in Tables 1-4. A broad and arbitrary classification of the single molecular source, [ABLXL2], based on experimental results, is presented in the following section (Eqs. 1-6, A and B, are the phase-forming elements; Lx and L2 are ligands that can be similar or different). The concept is elaborated on the basis of different Mg- and Al-containing alkoxides that have been used as precursors to MgAl2O4 particles or films [104, 259, 260, 263, 316, 317].
