The optical properties of STFs offer a particularly rich area for study. In addition to the influence of the innumerable variations of nanowire morphology on the optical properties of the film, the large range of materials out of which STFs may be constructed, with their intrinsic electromagnetic properties, compound the number of possibilities. Dielectric materials have been given the greatest attention. Even within this restricted class of materials, there are many variations. For example, dielectric materials may be: highly absorptive or nearly non-absorptive, weakly dispersive or highly dispersive, linear or non-linear, chiral or non-chiral, gyrotropic or non-gyrotropic. STFs offer many opportunities and challenges in both theoretical and experimental areas.
