Nanotechnology is all about the manipulation of atoms and molecules. Atoms seldom exist in a solitary state. Occasionally, atoms join together with their own kind of element. Sometimes, the atom joins together with other elements. When an atom of one element chemically combines with an atom of another kind of element, they form a compound. For example, water (H2O) is a compound made from two elements, hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). The smallest part of the compound is a molecule, a combination of two or more atoms.
Molecules range in size from a few atoms to thousands of atoms. How do atoms join together to form molecules?
