Department Of Defense

The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces that are needed to deter war and to protect the security of the United States. The department's headquarters is at the Pentagon.

The DOD has a long history of supporting innovative nanotechnology research efforts for the future advancement of warfighter and battle systems capabilities. The DOD includes the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Army Research Office (ARO), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).

Since the mid-1990s, DOD identified nanoscience as a strategic research area that would require a substantial amount of basic research funding on a long-term basis. The potential of nanotechnology applications will impact many areas for future warfighting. Some of these areas include chemical and biological warfare defense, a reduction in the weight of warfighting equipment, high-performance information technology, and uninhabited vehicles and miniature satellites.
