Emerging nanotechnologies hold great promise for creating new means of detecting air pollutants, and cleaning polluted waste streams and groundwater. A research group is now testing the use of magnetic nanoparticles that can absorb and trap organic contaminants in water. If the testing continually succeeds, the process can also be very effective in cleaning up contaminated Superfund sites—hazardous and toxic waste sites—in the United States. See Chapter 8 for more information about the environment.
