Purdue University's Department of Physics and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in conjunction with the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, offers an exhibit called "Nanotechnology: The Science of Making Things Smaller." In the exhibit, Youngsters will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about nanotechnology through video animations, a wall of nano-art, hands-on activities, posters, and a LEGO® scanning probe microscope. In fact, the first stop in the exhibit for many visitors is the LEGO® working model of a scanning probe microscope. The LEGO® model " sees" by probing objects with a small, sharp tip. By slowly touching the LEGO® model surface with a tip, a three-dimensional image can be generated and displayed on a computer.
