Another example of rapid growth in nanotechnology applications is in the field of wear-resistant paints and other kinds of coatings. Beginning in 1996, the Department of Defense (DOD) supported funding for developing processes to manufacture coatings for use in the marine environment.
Then in 2000, the first nanostructured coating was qualified for use on gears of air-conditioning units for U.S. Navy ships. DOD estimates that use of the coatings on this equipment will result in a $20 million reduction in maintenance costs over 10 years. The development ofwear-resistant coatings by the DOD will lead to commercial applications that can extend the lifetime ofmoving parts in everything from personal cars to heavy industrial machinery.
