Using The Selfassembly Strategy To Make Products

About one-quarter of the 2,000 or so nanotechnology projects the National Science Foundation now sponsors involve molecular self-assembly.

Molecular self-assembly is the most important of the nanoscale fabrication techniques because it's fast, inexpensive, and produces less waste.

Some of the major companies investing heavily in self-assembly include Merck, Pfizer, 3M, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard. About one-quarter of the 2,000 or so nanotechnology projects the National Science Foundation now sponsors involve self-assembly.

Many soft or fluid consumer products such as foods, paints, detergents, personal care products, and cosmetics contain nanometer structures that are formed by the self-assembly of molecules.
