Chromatography

Liquid chromatography methods such as analytical HPLC and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC; also called gel-permeation chromatography or GPC) utilize a column to separate components of a mixture in a liquid mobile phase based on their interaction with a solid stationary phase. The eluents are passed through UV-vis and fluorescence detectors with a flow cell where the absorbance and fluorescence is recorded to determine the purity of the sample. Although these techniques are suitable for stable polymers, dendrimers,15 functionalized fullerenes, and protein- and peptide-based nanomaterial, they are not suitable for particles that degrade under experimental conditions or have excessive nonspecific binding to the solid matrix.
