In recent years, biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles have attracted attention as potential drug carriers because of their applications in the controlled delivery of drugs, their ability to target organs and tissues, their function as carriers for DNA in gene therapy, and their ability to perorally deliver proteins, peptides, and genes.8,9 Langer8 stated that the construction of fully biomimetic matrices containing all of the required chemical and topographical factors has not yet been achieved. Scientists are focusing on the design of new polymeric materials in which both topographical features and chemical cues act synergistically to qualify as drug-delivery carriers. Polymeric nanoparticles can be prepared either by the polymerization of monomers or from the preformed polymers. This chapter will focus on the former process.
