Figure I17

A reproduction of "Power" by Cris Orfescu. This was created from an electron-microscope image of graphite nanoparticles. It is easy to detect the nanoparticle structure in this creation, even while getting a sense of the artist's conception of the nanostructure. (Image reproduced with permission of the artist.)

observations of actual nanotech structures, are entitled to copyright protection. But what about the nanotech structures themselves? The fact that Cris Orfescu uses electron-microscope scans reflects the fact that these structures are so small that they cannot be seen with visible light—the wavelength of visible light is hundreds of nanometers, and therefore too large to discriminate the much smaller nanotech structures.
