Other artists produce creations that do retain some impression or semblance of the appearance of nanotech structures, but subject to the creative input of the artist. One artist who takes such an approach is Cris Orfescu. Born in Romania in 1956 and holding a graduate degree in materials science, he currently lives and works in Los Angeles and has received recognition for producing what he describes as "nanoart." He often uses a process in which he takes electron-microscope scans of nanotech structures, using a computer-painting process, and then prints the result with archival inks on canvas. The result is a work that retains a visual impression of the nanotech structure complemented by the view of the artist (Figure I.17).
