Several methods exist for the manufacture of nanoparticles. Table 1 lists the most important manufacturing methods. A very comprehensive compilation of preparation methods is given in the book Colloidal Drug Delivery Systems . Only a few new considerably different manufacturing methods have been developed since the publication of this book; these include the above-mentioned methods to produce particles with covalently attached PEG chains and methods to attach linkers for drugs or targeting moieties. Following, the most frequently used preparations are briefly described.
