Conclusions

In summary, while there have been numerous efforts for ex vivo diagnosis of inflammation and infection (from blood samples or other bodily fluids), much effort is needed to develop in vivo sensors. Some cues can be taken from drug delivery systems which have been shown to take external information to release drugs to fight infection or reduce inflammation; however, these systems do not transfer information from inside to outside of the body. Thus, the future is bright for developing sensors that can combine existing technologies to sense inflammation and infection surrounding implants.
