Musculoskeletal System

The musculoskeletal system is an organ system that consists of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues to provide form, support, stability, and mobility to the body. The skeletal portion made up of bones serves both a structural function (providing support and protection for vital organs) and a reservoir function (e.g., as the storage for essential minerals). Different bones are often connected by ligaments to form a joint to allow motion. A ligament connects bone to bone and provides the stability to synovial or diarthrodial joints. In order to develop better biomaterials and novel devices for musculoskeletal tissue regeneration, it is crucial to understand the biology, physiology, and functions of these tissues. Therefore, two of the most important and frequently injured tissues, bone and ligaments, will be highlighted here.
